What Is Nam Pai?
Every Chiang Mai local knows Nam Pai — Thailand's answer to Kyoto's *kawadoko* (riverside dining platforms). Wooden platforms built right in the Ping River let you feast on Thai food and drinks while cool water flows beneath your feet. Then jump straight into the river to cool off. It's the quintessential local summer experience.

Songkran – The Secret Water Festival Spot
Songkran (Thai New Year, April 13–15) is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage event. In Chiang Mai's old city, it's a no-holds-barred water fight — but some people worry about the hygiene of moat water being splashed around.
The alternative? Songkran at a Nam Pai in Mae Rim. Instead of tourist-heavy chaos, you join local Chiang Mai people for water play in clean river water.
